El Roi, The God Who Sees

There are several names throughout Scripture for God that are used to emphasize a distinct

quality of God. The name, El Roi, means, “the God Who sees” and it is first used in the story of

Hagar.

Hagar was the servant of Sarah, wife of Abraham. A son had been promised to Abraham

by God despite his old age, and when years passed without the son coming forth by Sarah, the

couple took matters into their own hands. Hagar was asked to step in for Sarah for wifely duties

in the hope of conceiving a son. When Hagar was discovered to be with child, Sarah then

became exceedingly jealous and mistreated Hagar. Hagar fled into the desert alone and

discouraged. It is there that God met Hagar with compassion and a promise of hope for the

future. Hagar in gratitude uplifts the name of the Lord as, El Roi, “The God Who sees.”

Many of us have found ourselves in a situation or place where we feel abandoned, mistreated, or

overlooked by someone or something. It is easy in these times to come into the agreement that

we are unseen and do not hold value, when in fact we have a Father in Heaven Who deeply loves

us. In John 10:14 Jesus explains that He knows His sheep. The Greek word for, “to know” in this

instance is, “Ginosko” which translated means to know intimately, fully, completely, and in full.

Although we may feel forgotten by the world, we are never forgotten by our Lord. He is the God

Who fully sees us and loves us.

Our worth and value is not determined by who on earth sees us, but rather by the Creator Who

fashioned you in His very Own image. You are an image bearer of the Creator of the Cosmos,

and you are seen, known, and loved. Take comfort in knowing that the God Who saw Hagar all

alone in the barren desert thousands of years ago also sees you this very day.

Prayer of A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) to

El Roi, The God Who Sees

Adoration

Father God, we praise and adore You, the God Who has crafted us, and Who sees us. We know

that You see us as Your beautiful creations, and all our worship is to You and You alone.

Confession

Father God, we confess before you the times where we have come into agreement with the lie

that we are not seen, or that You do not see us. Father, we do not desire to live in deceit, and we

confess to You where we have believed the Enemy more than we have trusted in Your Word.

Thanksgiving

Father God, we thank You that You are the God Who sees. We thank You that we are Your

creations, and that we belong to You and You alone. Thank You Lord for Your truth and for the

ability to come before You. Thank You, Lord for being the Good Shepard Who knows His flock

in full.

Supplication

Father God, help us to not attune our hearts to any voice but Yours. Help us to adopt it as an

irrevocable part of our identity that we are seen, known, and loved by You, the God Who sees.
