Jehovah Rohi, The Lord Our Shepherd

Jehovah Rohi, The Lord Our Shepherd

Hello my beautiful sister! If you are reading this, then that means you made it to 2022! This fact alone is enough to celebrate. We can rejoice in God because through it all, we are alive and well in the land of the living. God is yet faithful and still draws us to greater intimacy in our relationship with Him in this new year. I am grateful one of the ways we get to grow in our knowledge of God is by studying the many names of God revealed to us in scripture.

In this first blog post of 2022, I am excited to kick off our theme this year, “The Names of God.” This month we will zoom in on the name Jehovah Rohi, which means, The Lord Our Shepherd. With the excitement of a new year also comes the reality of facing the uncertainty of what the year will bring. Especially in light of the past two years, the one thing we have all been able to count on is this: uncertainty is inevitable. However, remembering the Lord is Jehovah Rohi, The Lord Our Shepherd, offers us great comfort, courage, and confidence no matter what uncertainties we may encounter.

When we consider the role of a shepherd, we think of one who tends to their flock. A shepherd offers guidance and guards against any danger coming to the flock. It’s easy to observe the heart of God as our Heavenly Father through His role as the Lord Our Shepherd. Let’s take a closer look at how God demonstrates His nature and character through His name, Jehovah Rohi.

1. The Lord Our Shepherd is Our Protector.

One of the main roles of the shepherd is to protect the sheep from the attacks of wolves. Jesus said In John 10:14-15 (NIV), “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me – just as the Father knows me and I know the Father – and I lay down my life for the sheep.” As we embrace God as our Good Shepherd, we will not cling to fear of the unknown regarding the uncertainties of life, because we understand God is too good of a Father to allow harm to overtake us. Jesus was even willing to lay down His life in order that we might be eternally protected. God protects us from every evil scheme of the enemy. We are never uncovered, but always preserved and sheltered by Jehovah Rohi.

2. The Lord Our Shepherd is Our Provider.

Another role we recognize in Jehovah Rohi is his provision offered as our shepherd. Psalm 23:1 (NIV) reminds us, “The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.” No matter what comes our way this year, we don’t have to wonder or worry over whether or not God will take care of us. Jehovah Rohi is aware of all we need and want. He is committed to providing for us because we are His sheep and He is our Good Shepherd. The sheep are never responsible for securing necessities in order to survive. They simply accept and receive the provision offered from their shepherd. My dear sister, I want to remind you this year that the Lord is faithful to take care of you because he knows how to shepherd our souls. He takes care of us spiritually and in every sense naturally through His provision. There is nothing missing, broken, or fragmented about Jehovah Rohi. Therefore, we lack nothing.

3. The Lord Our Shepherd is Our Pilot.

We have the benefit of knowing God has everything already figured out concerning us. Just as a pilot knows how to perfectly navigate, Jehovah Rohi knows just how to perfectly lead and guide us according to His plan for us. Our job as sheep is to trust Him. Sheep are not the smartest animals. They need direction, and they willingly submit to the will of their shepherd. This should likewise be our response to Jehovah Rohi when he acts as our personal pilot. We trust that He is in control and do not try to take control of things for ourselves. Psalm 23:3-4 (NIV) says, “He guides me along the right path for his name sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Whatever current life circumstances we are attempting to navigate, we have assurance that God is with us as our personal shepherd. We can relinquish every situation and allow Jehovah Rohi to pilot us through it all.

Prayer of A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) to

Jehovah Rohi, The Lord Our Shepherd

Adoration ~ Father, I acknowledge you as Jehovah Rohi, The Lord Our Shepherd, most worthy of all adoration. You are worthy of my worship, and I worship the beauty of your holiness.

Confession ~ God, I confess I have not always honored and appreciated you as my Good Shepherd. There are times I have been negligent to recognize it was you tenderly caring for me despite my poor choices. Please forgive me for every decision I made as a wandering sheep, abandoning your guidance. I realize and confess I am not capable of leading myself.

Thanksgiving ~ Jehovah Rohi, thank you for your ultimate protection, provision, and piloting over my life. Thank you for the countless times you have acted as my shepherd, even in ways I am unaware. Thank you for for the promise and assurance you will always take care of me.

Supplication ~ Lord, please give me a heart and mind to obey you as my shepherd. Help me to yield to your pruning and prodding as you guide me in the way I should go. Grant me peace as I rest in your ability to perfectly navigate my life at every turn and point. You are my shepherd, and I desire to hear your voice so that I may follow you only. May I fully embrace you as Jehovah Rohi, The Lord Our Shepherd, throughout the year, and throughout my life.

In the name of Jesus I pray, amen.
